Chapter 8 - Vane

Clearly, his treatment of Chloe had left her exhausted. When he woke at sundown, she was still resting peacefully upon his chest. He had carefully slipped out from beneath her and cautiously crossed the room, leaving her to sleep a little while longer, knowing it would take her a while to grow used to her days and nights being flipped upside down. Guilt once again stabbed at him, knowing that he had done that to her, yet he was a selfish and bloodthirsty monster and he always got what he wanted. Or so he told himself.

He had only just washed and dressed for the night in one of his many fine designer suits when one of his men knocked on his bedroom door.

"What is it?" he said calmly, knowing they would be able to hear him even through the thick wood. The door opened almost instantly and Morgan stepped inside with a deep bow.

"I'm sorry to disturb you so early in the evening, Your Grace, but you have a visitor," Morgan explained and with a gesture of his hand, he added, "She awaits you in your study."

Vane had been so lost in thoughts of his time spent with Chloe, still reeling from the sheer pleasure he'd felt with her, that he had totally dropped his guard and hadn't heard a single thing of what had been happening outside his bedroom.

A thrill ran through him at the thought of finding Chloe awaiting him in the study. He never expected her to do so. He'd always expected that he would have to go and find her whenever he wished to feed or have one of his men bring her to him but so far their arrangement had been nothing like what he had expected. He guessed that she most likely felt the same way. He hadn't exactly kept his monsterly walls up around her as he did with the other humans he wished to frighten into submission.

Yet even before he entered the study, he quickly recognized the person sitting waiting for him by scent alone. It was the scent he had known for almost two hundred and fifty years, ever since he had found her working in a French brothel. That should have been his first warning that she was trouble.

"Rebecca," he greeted her coolly as he entered and the tall, blonde vampire rose to her feet languidly to curtsey as though she only did it because it was expected of her and not because she really wished to show her respect.

The kind, sweet young human Vane had once known was gone, replaced by this contemptuous and cold vampiress, a vampiress he had created. She greeted him back just as coldly. "King Vane."

"What are you doing here?" he asked, crossing the study to take his seat at his desk. "Last I heard you were somewhere in Italy."

"Oh, isn't it sweet of you to keep tabs on me." Rebecca smiled her most famously charming smile and began to sidle toward him, her hips swaying seductively.
